About the Book
Advice tells you what to do. Principles teach you how to decide the next time you face something nobody has written advice for yet. That is the difference, and that is what this book is for.
Each chapter is a short essay — three to five pages — pointed at one principle. There are forty-two of them. You can read the book from front to back. You can also let it fall open and read the page in front of you. Both readings are intentional.

Your business is not who you are. It is the vehicle you are driving. People who confuse the two end up taking exits because the vehicle wants to — exits the driver never chose.
The cost is not failure. The cost is the slow, expensive success in a direction you never selected. The numbers look fine. The life doesn't quite. You can't explain it to anyone because, from the outside, it's working.
The fix is not bigger ambition. The fix is naming the road — specifically, in numbers and scenes and consequences — and then asking, every quarter, whether the vehicle is still on it. Most of the time, it isn't. Most of the time, that is information, not failure.
